German-Turkish Advanced Research Centre for ICT – An Affiliated Institute of TU Berlin
International cooperation is essential for the formation of future projects because looking beyond the obvious and realizing different social and cultural experiences are key factors for cracking technical questions concerning the future city.

No matter if it is Berlin, Frankfurt, Paris, Istanbul, Ankara, New York or Kairo, big cities worldwide have similar challenges for the future.

GT-ARC's mission is to take a leading role in creating ICT-based innovation through German-Turkish cooperation by (i) bringing the bright minds of the two countries together to design and develop core technologies for future innovative solutions, (ii) providing a framework for joint projects, staff mobility, idea exchange, and value creation among relevant stakeholders.

GT ARC is supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, and the Turkish Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications.

Research

Basic Technologies

Motivation

Information and Communication Technologies are increasingly used in our society for solving problems and challenges in domains ranging from energy, health and security to transport and telecommunications. As a result of this trend, new technologies emerge with very short innovation cycles, and face with several critical limitations such as scalability, performance, efficiency, reliability, availability and usability. These diverse and complex problems require cutting-edge multi-disciplinary research supported by strong engineering skills.

The application areas of the GT ARC are tailored to design and develop ICT-based solutions towards addressing today's society challenges.

Research Focus

GT ARC focuses on the research and development of enabling ICT platforms, mechanisms, and tools for contemporary solutions that address the grand challenges and needs of our society, such as mobility, energy, and health. Based on this goal, GT ARC focuses on following basic research topics:

AI MIDDLEWARE

Aims at a holistic approach to support the streamlined development and deployment of data-driven applications towards realizing distributed autonomous systems, focusing on making device data available for AI/ML applications.
In this context, we have been developing an "AI middleware" and associated tools, which support both the extraction and semantic abstraction of device data as well as the development, deployment and monitoring of AI solutions on the ingested data.

DATA ANALYTICS

Provides the necessary run-time and testing environment for AI models, libraries of trained AI models and data sets, as well as the supporting tools for general planning, perception and prediction functions.
A particular research focus of GT-ARC is on the design and development of the algorithms and tools that support more automated ML model selection and hyper-parameter optimization. We are also increasingly more involved in enhancing the explainability of AI models in our research, improving their applicability in critical domains such as automated mobility and health.

CYBERSECURITY

Focus is on the design and development of novel algorithms and tools to support network vulnerability monitoring and analysis as well as AI-based attack prediction, detection and response for connected systems.
In this direction, we have been developing both a real test environment and a simulation framework for monitoring and visualizing the network vulnerability state, attack modeling, and possible countermeasures. These are then utilized for game-theoretical modeling of attacker-defender interactions and the identification of countermeasure tasks, algorithms for automated response selection, and metrics for countermeasure effectiveness.

AUTONOMOUS SYSTEMS

Diversity and complexity of problems require solutions with inherent intelligence such as monitoring its environment, processing the information, collaborating with others and autonomously making decisions.
GT ARC focuses on basic research activities for developing algorithms and approaches with self-* properties such as self-organization, self-healing and self-stabilization. The focal points of autonomous solutions are reliability, availability and adaptability.

APPLICATION AREAS

SMART CITIES

Targets a vision of fully connected and integrated cities, producing huge amounts of data, which are processed in real time for dynamic planning and optimization in the domains of energy, transport, etc.

How can we strengthen sustainability with artificial intelligence in the BeIntelli project? We discussed this with the Konrad Adenauer Foundation Turkey at the conference on “Artificial Intelligence and Sustainable Life” with students from Bilkent University and Middle Eastern Technical University. We see many opportunities: Reducing emissions through intelligent traffic control, ride-sharing and more inclusive access to mobility.

The conference began with impulses from our project manager Sahin Albayrak and the former member of the Bundestag Dr. Andreas Nick, among others. We then presented our research projects and developed new ideas in interdisciplinary groups, which we would now like to develop further beyond the conference.

The project “CHARIOT” aims to design and develop a scalable IoT middleware solution that integrates different types of IoT devices, technologies, and stakeholders through open APIs. The three-year project, founded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, started in November 2016.

CHARIOT proposes an IoT middleware framework that aims to address the aforementioned issues to highlight the added value of the holistic networking of IoT. Main challenges are the interoperability of all entities, representation of various actors ranging from simple sensors to complex devices to humans, a logical orchestration of all services, and learning ability for its entities. Furthermore, easy development and deployment of services are additional important aspects to make the system more modular and therefore more adaptable. CHARIOT enables stakeholders to represent various devices, develop efficient and dynamic services, as well as implement novel applications extracting the added value from the holistic networking provided by the IoT middleware.

This year DAI-Labor and GT-ARC of TU Berlin will once again present their research results at CeBIT Eurasia from 11th to 14th September in hall 9, booth 9D-02, in the “Innovation and Future Technology Arena”.

By entering the apartment the lamp switches on automatically, at the same time the little vacuum cleaning robot welcomes you and dinner is already warmed up in the oven. Experience this special guidance through the home of the future from 11th to 14th September in Istanbul at CeBIT Eurasia. The Distributed Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and partner German-Turkish Advanced Research Centre for ICT – both institutes of Technical University Berlin – will present current and exciting research projects, mainly with focus on “Smart Home”.

The partner stand is divided into five rooms. In each area will be presented different exhibits:

Living room

Smart Media Assistant

The Smart Media Assistant is an Internet based multimedia and entertainment platform for home. Beneath personalized TV, communication and information services which allow an interactive media experience, semantic methods customize the content of the services and information for the user and her needs.

Vacuum cleaning robot

In the project “AutoPnP” (Plug & Play for automation systems) software for robot system has been developed which is easy and cost-saving adaptable to different needs. Exemplified this will be demonstrated on our vacuum cleaning robot. The robot is localized and regulated through sensors and is used by planning and executing different actions – in this case its vacuum cleaning.

Health room

Smart Bike + CLOG

Stay fit through exercise: on the screen appears for any city a route for a virtual bicycle tour in 3D that is visualized over “Google Earth”; additional information about places of interest along the tour create the training entertaining. Special functions as for example the information about the speed, pulse, collected activity points and burned calories motivate.

agnes²

agnes² is a mobile electronic patient folder for tablet PCs which arranges the patient care much more organized and easy. The app is used by patient visits of the “agneszwei”-specialists and was developed in the “KoPrA”-project in cooperation with the AOK.

NutriMe

NutriMe is an application for Android devices, aiming to improve the foodiness. The app analysis and evaluates eaten meals, food habits and physical condition of the user. Thus the app creates an overview about the in a specific time partaken calories, compares them to the target supply and evaluates the food qualitative by dint of the nutrition pyramid.

Kitchen

Smart Nutrition Assistant

What do you cook, if you are not sure, what is in your fridge? You do not need to remember any more if you need a special ingredient for a recipe or the milk expires soon. The Smart Nutrition Assistant knows the food at home and the matching recipes. By cooking he leads step by step through the cooking agenda and knows the nutrition content as well.
